Himalayan salt has been a big buzzword in the health industry lately. Given its health-promoting benefits (which we’ll thoroughly discuss in a little while), we truly believe they’re deserving of all the attention they get.
It’s for the same reasons we’ve infused our Earth Fed Elixir with this exotic pink salt!
Here we’ll discuss the science of how big a difference it will make when you ditch your regular salt and go pink instead.
But before we dig deeper into the Himalayan salt, let’s first uncover the relevance of salt in the body
Why are salts important?
Electrolytes have already been proven helpful in keeping the body function at its peak. They reinforce our muscular vigor, maintain healthy neuromuscular coordination, and most importantly, restore the fluid balance in the body.
The most common source of electrolytes is salt. Electrolytes are the ionized minerals resulting when the salt gets dissolved by the body’s fluids.
So there’s no argument on the significance of salt in keeping your body functioning properly. But what is this new salt that’s making waves in the health industry?
What’s Himalayan salt?
Himalayan sea salt is a kind of rock salt mined from the Khewra Salt Mine located in the foothills of the Himalayas, within Pakistan’s Punjab region.
Unlike your regular table salt, Himalayan salt has a pinkish shade thanks to the trace minerals present in the salt, like magnesium, potassium, and calcium.
The Himalayan salt is extracted by hand and minimally processed to yield an additive-free unrefined product, essentially more natural than table salt.
Famous health personalities like Mike Adams a.k.a. The Health Ranger, claim that Himalayan sea salt is better for health since it contains the complete spectrum of minerals and elements as “Mother Earth intended.”
Are there any truths to these? What makes Himalayan sea salt better than your regular table salt? To answer these questions, we’ve listed the science of some of the benefits of Himalayan sea salt:
The Benefits of Pink Himalayan Salt
1. Perfect for keeping the body hydrated
Water helps the skin look vibrant and the body perform optimally. But during extremely rigorous activities, our cells expend most of their fluids through sweat. This can leave us feeling dehydrated when we lose more water than we take in, and refilling our bodies with water alone won’t cut it.
When mixed with water, Himalayan salt breaks down into different ions that accelerate water’s entry into the cells, thereby bypassing dehydration and restoring the body’s fluid balance. This means we can work much longer without any decline in performance from dehydration.
2. It has less sodium content
Unlike regular table salts, pink Himalayan salt only contains 98% sodium chloride while the remaining 2% is attributed to other trace elements and minerals. Although the sodium percentage in the Himalayan salt is reduced by a tiny fraction, it may still pose some health benefits in the long run.
Recent research on the effect of low-sodium salt substitutes revealed that they’re associated with a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure.
Although more in-depth research on the subject is required, current data point towards the benefits of low sodium salts like the Himalayan sea salt in lowering the odds of hypertension.
3. It has more trace elements than regular salt
As mentioned above, 2% of the Himalayan salt’s nutrient composition is dedicated to trace elements. A 2020 study analyzed the mineral composition of Himalayan sea salt and found that it contained higher nutrient levels than white table salt in the following minerals (and their relevance in the body):
- Calcium - Mineral most associated with teeth and bones, important for regular heart rhythms, muscle contraction, and brain function
- Iron - A vital element for red blood cells and hormone synthesis
- Magnesium - Important for muscle and nerve function, plus energy production
- Manganese - Helps in creating connective tissues and bones
- Potassium - Supports normal blood pressure and normal fluid balance inside the cells
- Copper - Works along with iron in forming red blood cells
- Chromium - Helps move glucose into the cell and transform fats, carbs, proteins into energy
- Molybdenum - Assists in breaking down toxins and is used to process proteins and genetic materials in the body
- Phosphorus - Helps to develop bones and teeth
- Selenium - Plays an essential role in a healthy immune system
- Zinc - Important for normal functioning of immune system and metabolism
4. It’s a more natural salt
According to some advocates of the pink salt, it is an unrefined, unprocessed raw salt manually mined from salt caves that formed eons ago as ocean salt has settled into geologic pockets. The most processing it has received is being stone-ground and Medical News Today believes the tale has some merit.
Conventional table salt is typically heavily refined and mixed with anti-caking agents that help prevent clumping like sodium aluminosilicate or magnesium carbonate.
Himalayan pink salt is essentially less artificial and doesn’t contain any of these additives.
5. A good source of electrolytes
We’ve already given a quick run-through on the benefits of electrolytes above. And needless to say, electrolytes are essential minerals to keep your body consistently performing at its peak, especially amidst intense workout sessions.
Although all kinds of salt that contain sodium can supplement the body’s electrolyte needs, regular table salt doesn’t have the beneficial trace elements to carry that out.
These are precisely the reasons why we used Himalayan salt in our hydration packs – not only to give you the best bang for your buck but also to ensure that you get the best kick for your drink!
