I am somebody who would have said I was in great shape 10 years ago (I'm 44) and haven't felt I needed to do much more than live an active life and eat well to keep up my fitness level. About 5 years ago, I sustained a series of injuries and never felt I fully recovered. I tried a number of fitness regimes and classes including yoga, crossfit, bootcamps and running but I never saw the kind of gains that I had experienced in the past with my training and my injuries (a couple sprained ankles and a shoulder rotator muscle tear) never seemed to improve. I just finished the Couch to Champion program and for the first time in a while I'm not only feeling stronger (my max squat when I began the program is now the weight that I use for a 12 rep set) but I'm seeing improvement in my pain levels and range of motion at the sites of my injuries. Also, I'm excited to go work out again. I don't think the program is a miracle cure for everyone but I think it is well put together, easy to follow and well thought out. The movement libraries are a great way to get familiar with new exercises, and the workouts are uncomplicated while still managing to thoroughly target all major muscle groups. Here's why I think it worked so well for me where other fitness programs failed: My body needs intense resistance training but I also need to take it a little easier now that I'm over 40 and I don't recover so fast. Working out in groups is great for motivation but for me can also lead to over-training because I'm competitive and strive to meet the expectations of those around me. Running and stretching are great but don't build muscle. I had a strong base and a muscular frame at one time and my joints, skeleton and circulatory system was adapted to that. Loosing the muscle mass that supported all that left me vulnerable to injury and stretching and running were just giving me more chances to re-injure those vulnerable joints. Once I started training in the way that my body was best adapted for, things came back really quickly and easily. I was a little worried at the outset that heavy resistance training on my own would be a recipe for disaster and without a solid program supported by resources like the movement library and the other videos, it probably would have been. With that support and the thoughtful combinations of warm-ups and simple exercises. This program has been the best thing to happen to my fitness in a decade. Thanks!
